Reflection

As you all know my name is lindsey. I am 19 years old and in my first year of college at EVCC. I am majoring in photography  my one main passion. Photography to me is the way i express my self to the world, i love it because I can say something with it without even saying anything at all. I have always been a creative person , always trying new ways in which i could be creative but photography was definitely the one way i was really good at. Even thought i have tried to express my creativity in writing it doesn't always come out the way i would like it to. That is why i was worried that english 101 would be a bit of a struggle for me , which it has some but not as bad as i thought. I actually enjoyed writing about the topics that was did such as community and identity. I felt like they were topics that I could really try and put my personality in to which I liked. Some of the papers i did write however i know could have been better if i wouldn't have put off writing them until the last minute. This first year of college has definitely been a long journey for me, with trying to balance out work with school work and balancing everything out. I have to say thought that for the most part I am happy with how i did in my first year of college. Coming from a small town and a small high school it was very different going to a school where i only knew maybe a hand full of people and those of which weren't in any of my classes I think it helped me grow as a person and I think you can see that in my writing.

Through out this quarter we read about a lot of interesting people and there struggles and triumphs with different things. we first talked about identity which for me was one of my favorite sections.  The reading we were assigned really spoke to me, especially the reading by Kathy Wilson called "dude looks like a lady". This piece of writing really stood out to me because my best friends doesn't have any hair and for her it isn't a choice like Kathy. So i really could understand what Kathy Wilson was saying because i know what my best friend goes through and it similar to what Kathy does. Every topic this quarter I felt like i could relate to in some way which i liked because it made it easier to write about and explain were i was coming from. It really made me think more about the different issues such as identity and community. It also helped me realize and form my own opinions on the subject and i felt like i got to know more where i stood on certain subject such as if tradition is a good or bad things and different things like that. This quarter helped me realize what all is out there, i guess more of the real world. I got to understand more where different people were coming from  such as  Firoozeh Dumas and her struggles with her name and coming to America. Also understanding more about how other people deal with discrimination, such as the movie i watched freedom writers about those kids thats just wanted to learn but the school thought they didn't deserve the time because they were in a gang.  Everything we read and wrote this quarter really helped me more opened minded about those issues in real life.

For my reflection of work i choose to use four piece that i was proud of and that i felt had a lot of my personality in it.  The pieces i choose were my space age a paper about My Space and pop culture, a blog called Food and Family which talks about food being a tradition , a paper about community and how its changed since my grandma was young and a blog I wrote about my work being a community. Hope you enjoy reading .

Introduction to piece one

For this piece I choose a paper that I wrote talking about how my space has effected our pop culture. In this paper i go on to compare how it is good and bad for teens today. For instance  I talk about how My Space has increased our ability to communicate with each other but has also cause us to stop a lot of person contract with each other. I go on to analyse this subject weather it's a pro or a con to have My space.  Here's something I said the the piece that is talking about the cons to my space "This I think personally is one of the down falls to My Space; it takes away the real human interaction. I could meet someone on My Space and they could say they are one person and be another, which could be dangerous." . Now here's something i said that has a pro to my space "My Space is a new and easier way to communicate with people, it’s better than e-mail because you can put a face to whom you’re e-mailing. It is also an easier way to find people you haven’t seen in a while, such as your high school classmates or old childhood friends.  ".  Those are just some of my arguing points to weather My space is good or bad for todays pop culture. Through out the essay I try to compare and contrast all the different possibilities and analyse if that is  good or bad this for the way life is right now. In these piece i really tried to get down to the basic point of weather it was good or bad to have my space and it explain to the people the ups and downs to it. So  I hope you enjoy reading it.

My Space age

Growing up in the age of technology I have seen a big change on the way we communicate with each other. When I was younger it was through the telephone. Then when I was about thirteen it was by e-mail. After I reached about 14 and entered high school it became My Space. Back then no one would have ever known that those two little words “ My Space” would be so popular now. From then on My Space became a thing you must have, more than a trend but almost a way of living, which makes it a very big part of pop culture today. My Space is a big part of our lives now but not even five years ago would we have even heard of it? This pop culture trend has quickly changed communication for the better and for the worse. Even though My Space is an easy way to communicate with people, is it really the best way to communicate with people? Before My space and the Internet we mainly used to interact with each other over the phone or in person but now you could go your whole life with out meeting someone. This I think personally is one of the down falls to My Space; it takes away the real human interaction. I could meet someone on My Space and they could say they are one person and be another, which could be dangerous.  Also meeting someone on My Space and then meeting him or her in person, you can find that there might be a personality difference. People that come across outgoing on My Space might be shyer in person, or they might not even seem like the same person. I guess it’s just a different experience then if you meet someone in person and get to know him or her face to face. That is really what’s sad about My Space and all this technology is that people can go a lot longer with out seeing each other because they have so many other ways to communicate. That is how My Space has really changed our culture, it has made us more dependant on other ways to communicate rather than in person or on the phone.  My Space has also brought a new level of knowing personal information about each other that no other technology has before which can be a good and bad thing. It is good because you can know more about what your friends like and it’s a good way to express yourself to your friends. It also can be a bad thing, like having people know when you and your boyfriend/ girlfriend break up because of your status of relationships or find out that your friends are talking behind your back.. It can cause unnecessary issues with friends, such as them asking why they aren’t on a certain spot on your top friends. Things like these are problems that My Space alone can cause in your personal life, but if you try to keep certain things more private my space is a good way to communicate with people. Even though My Space does have its down falls it also bring a lot of good things too. My Space is a new and easier way to communicate with people, it’s better than e-mail because you can put a face to whom you’re e-mailing. It is also an easier way to find people you haven’t seen in a while, such as your high school classmates or old childhood friends.  Like I said before, My space can be a good way to express yourself, showing people which song you like right now and picture of what you did over the weekend. It’s just in the way you express yourself that people have to be careful of so that it doesn’t cause problems with friends, but that can be true in any other way that you try and express yourself as well. For most teens My Space is just an escape in to their own world of friends and music, nothing really harmful about that. It can have it’s downfalls, but for the most part I think My Space is a good thing to have and isn’t as dangerous as some think. One thing is for sure that My Space is a pop culture trend and I am sure will be for a very long time to come.

Introduction to piece two

For this piece i choose to revise my Food and Family blog. This blog talked about how food relates to your family. I choose this piece because after I went back and re-read it i realized that i could have done a much better job writing and and that i didn't really capture the feel that i wanted to. I started editing it by changing my introduction to the the piece , I thought it was much to boring and decided to go with a more exciting approach. It was this "In my family the food in every holiday plays a big part of the tradition." I changed it to this "Growing up in my family there was only one time a day where we all come together out of our busy schedules to sit down and talk, that was dinner time. " Also realized that the piece was a little short and not very descriptive. After i realized that i went through and added more writing and description to the food and the place. I went through and found spelling mistakes and changed some of the wording so it would sound better to the reader. I added more detail about the food and why we have it so that the reader would get a since of familiarity. so I hope you enjoy my newly revised Food and Family piece.

Food and Family

Growing up in my family there was only one time a day where we all come together out of our busy schedules to sit down and talk, that was dinner time. This has always been a time where we talk about our days and new things that are happening in our lives. Its a time for us to bond and to enjoy each other company. Food is the main event around us sitting down together. so i would say food is definitely an important thing in our family, its what brings us together most of the time. Sounds sad i know but with our busy schedules its really the only time we have time to sit down and talk. Food especially becomes important around our house when it comes to holidays. Of course there is the given holidays like Thanksgiving and Cinco De Mayo but the day where food has the most tradition is Christmas. Christmas is also my birthday so we have two tradition in one day. Every christmas we have a routine and the food is part of that. Such as every Christmas morning we have sticky buns, bacon, fruit and Christmas cookies with a certain kind of juice.  Christmas breakfast has always been the same ever since i was born, but even more important then that my birthday cake on my actual birthday has been the same ever since I can remember. Its a different kind of cake called pumpkin dessert. If we didn't have this dessert on my birthday I don't think it would really feel like my birthday. To me now it has became more like a comfort food , and has become part of my birthday and wouldnt be the same with out it. We also have a tradition on christmas dinner, it like breakfast is always the same every year and because something to almost look forward to when the time comes. We have roast with mushroom sauce, gravy, mash-potatoes, salad and rolls. This meal is so special because my grandma has been making it for christmas dinner ever since my dad way little so you could definitely say its a tradition. Food can become a part of a tradition, it can become a comforting thing. Even on a normal day like when i go to my grandmas house it is tradition for me and her to sit down and drink tea and eat the same kind of cookies she always has.  So there are some traditions that do  revolve around food, if you think about it food is at almost every tradition you have or go to. wheather its a holiday or just a normal day thing.

Introduction to piece three

For this piece I choose a blog that I wrote talking about where I work being a community. when I wrote this piece my intention was to really let the reader know how close of a group we really are. I did this by talking about our values being the same and how our jobs all intertwine to make us closer together.  I go on to talk about how i have also grown up going to the place I work because of my mom and because of this it gives me a more insight on the way we are a community. I really tried to show the audience what it is like to work there and describe different jobs i do and different things at the office to give the read a better idea of what we are all about there.

AFM is a community

Arlington Family Medicine is a community.Arlington Family Medicine is where i work and we truly are a community not just a group of people. we work everyday together and we work well. We are there for each other when someone needs each other. We are all different in our own way ,dealing with our all our own problems but when we step in the doors of the office every morning we leave it at the door and come together and help each other out when we need it, and when we cant leave it at the door we are all each others shoulders to cry on.  We all know that each others jobs are equally difficult and hard so we alway try and help the other out if we arent busy , thats what really holds us together, the fact that we know what each other is going through, through out the day.
At my work the majority is women and there are three doctors who are men but the rest are women, so i would say we have a lot in common. we all value family highly, such as if some ones family member is sick or having a problem we will cover for the other one so they can go deal with that. we all share the need of money ,and thats why anyone works, because they need money. we also share a lot of the same interest in clothes, food, and in views on this. At times there is tension in the office when some one doesn't do something exactly right, or leaves work for some one else to do when they could have done it themselves. things like that cause tension but also help us be better workers so the same mistake doesn't happen twice.
I fit in this community in more ways than one. I grew up going to the office to see the doctor and also to see my mom. She is the manger at arlington family and so I have grown up going there and around the people that work there. when I finally got my licence is when i started working here with my mom, to me it is a place of comfort. I know everyone that works there and they know me, and a few of the workers are mothers of my friends so they truly have known me my whole life, and its easy to work with people you know. so people ask me if its hard to work with your mom, but for me I wouldn't have it any other way. its a great job and also a great feeling to fit in to this community of people.

Introduction to piece four

For this piece we were to write about our community and interview someone that was older than us to compare how much our community has changed . I choose to interview my grandma because to me I know she has seen the most change. This piece is important to me because it is about my hometown which means a lot to me. I like how it really shows that community and tradition tie together to make a better place to live.  I also like this piece because  I had a good time interview my grandma and hearing her stories about how things use to be and how much she thought things had changed.  I feel like I put a lot of heart into this piece because it is my hometown and thats why i choose this piece to be my writers choice.

Hometown Arlington

Growing up Arlington has always been my home. Arlington has been my community as it has been for my family for five generations. We have lived on the same land for these five-generations and the road we live on is even named after my family. That’s the kind of community I come from, that small town community where everyone knows everyone. For my grandma this was true, she did know everyone and when she was my age Arlington was a small town but she has seen it change to become more like a city then a small little country town. Which really makes it true that communities change with time but the traditions still stay the same. In 1950 Arlington was a quiet town, where farming was the main source of  income and where everyone knew everyone. Times were a lot slower pace back then, where church and family were the main focus in life. The only way to communicate was with a wall phone that ran on a party line, and the main form of travel was more with a bike than a car. Gas was only 25 cents and the entertainment they had was to go to the movies, which they did a lot. There were no phrases like “cool” or “hey dude”, if anything “dude” was a name for a ranch hand on a farm. Every year there was a Fourth of July parade and Arlington Hardware was a place to get supplies, as was the Co-op. The Silvana fair was the hit thing to go to in the summer, and football games to go to in the fall. Back then it was just an easier time to live where things were just simpler and there wasn’t any crime or drugs. It was a safer time to live in.  Now, in Arlington it’s not such a quiet town. It’s more common to not know anyone when you walk in to a bank then to know someone. People are always in a hurry to get somewhere or to leave somewhere. There are not as many farms now.  There are more small shopping malls and fast food restaurants. Every year I see more and more farms disappear and in there place goes an other housing development. It’s very rare to see children riding their bikes down the road because of how unsafe it can be. There are many forms of entertainment now, other than just going to the movies, in fact people rarely go to the movies because it cost too much. There are so many forms of communication now that it’s ridiculous; there are cell phones, email, home phone, pagers, and even My Space. Its not like back in the 50’s when people use to talk more in person, now its all about the different forms of communication. People could go their whole lives now with out talking in person. Which I think has changed our community, it has made our community more impersonal. People aren’t as friendly or willing to get to know other people, they just stick to there every day busy life. There is a lot more crime and definitely a very high drug rate then back in the day. Which is sad to think that are community has come to that, when it use to be such a safe place.
Even thought Arlington has changed over the years there are a few things that always stay the same. These things are tradition that have happened for many years and are still happening today. Such as the Arlington Fourth of July parade, ever since I was little every Fourth of July I have gone to this parade, and every year it is the same.  Even the one-year when it couldn’t be on Main Street because the whole down town was under construction and re-modeling, they still had the parade. It just was a street above Main Street instead. There is also the Silvana fair that happens every year no matter what, even though it has change venues a few times, the fair itself has stayed the same. There are many small traditions in a community that no matter how much time passes stay the same, some are big celebrations like a parade and some are small traditions like the one people have on my road. There are several families on my road that have had family members on the same piece of property for generations, just like my family. This is a small tradition in our community to keep the land in our family. Traditions like these are what make up our community. They give groundwork of the people that belong in the community and help the community grow and build like it should. Some of these traditions such as the Fourth of July parade or even the Silvana fair bring the people in our community together to bond and form a more unified place. Other small traditions do the same but just in a smaller way. There are a lot of different kinds of communities, some are big and some are small but they all seem to have some sort of tradition behind them. No matter how much the world and things change around us, these traditions will always stay the same. They are the base of the community and will always be and as long as these traditions stay the same the community will at least stay the same because it will form around these traditions. Which really makes it true that communities change with time but the traditions still stay the same.
